Three Top Sites for Free and Open Source Fonts for Designers

Most graphic designers are aware that fonts (or typography) add personality and customization to their print media and web designs, so when they find high quality fonts for free in one or two locations this makes his job easier.  With a variety of fonts at his or her fingertips, a designer has the ability to personalize his or her designs to accommodate his clients’ taste and budget.  However,  building a font library with a variety of design styles can get expensive.  The good news is that several website owners have  joined with professional font designers to make open source and free fonts available for personal and commercial use.

Why Select These font Websites When There Are so Many Others?

The following three sites are not the only font resources available on the internet, but they are a good start for building professionally designed typography resources especially if you are on a tight budget and want access to high quality fonts.  The font website owners have done the job of collecting, categorizing and making them available for download for either Windows or MAC platforms.  They also let you know how large the zipped file is which is always good to know as image files and some font files are usually very large.  Just the trouble they have taken in organizing the website alone saves a huge amount of time that would otherwise be spent browsing in a random way.

Each website’s layout also makes it easier to get information regarding the font designer, whether there are additional font families in the design, and whether there are any licensing restrictions.  You also get a very good preview of the font and style itself since the website owners have gone through the trouble of making that available for you.

For the most part, the fonts that have been made available or showcased are for commercial use; but, there are a few exceptions.  So, make sure that these few fonts that are included in these sites that are only for personal use are used for your those type of projects.
